Participant Quote
"What I found in Listening Life were caring leaders who took ‘listening’ seriously and a group of people willing to commit themselves to the process. This combination, along with the excellent written materials that were provided, created a place of trust. And yes, we genuinely did listen... to the individual members of the group and to Christ's Spirit among us."

What is spiritual formation?
We believe that every human is a spiritual being. Just as we have a real physical body we have a real spiritual nature. Because this is true we believe that our spirit can be affected and “formed” at all times. Listening Life Groups desire to create space for people to be intentional in allowing God to form us through love and in a relationship with Jesus Christ.

What is the heart of Listening Life?
The heart of these groups and individual practices is creating space to listen. In our busy, hectic, and noisy society we need intentional opportunities to stop and pay attention to God. We also believe that we all need a caring community to support us in this listening. God really is speaking to every human and these groups seek to encourage us to hear and respond.

What topics do these groups consider?
Beginning with a few weeks of a foundation of listening, the groups then transition to use the themes from the Newberg Friends weekly worship gatherings. These themes are focused around truth that is found in Scripture and encourage participants to allow God to speak these truths into their lives.

Who develops the materials?
We have a group of between 15 and 20 writers from the NFC community who take time to share out of their own journeys and develop the weekly individual and group materials. These folks take time to listen and let God direct their unique personality and style of writing as they reflect on the Scripture or topic for a particular week. More writers are always welcome to join the team!

How, when, and who starts Listening Life Groups?
Whenever there is a group of people (even just two) who desire to be intentional in forming a listening community, a group can begin. It is important to have a couple of people willing to lead and facilitate a new group. We would be happy to assist these leaders however we can. We also will periodically have groups that are starting up, and we will spread the word.

Do these groups meet for a certain period of time?
A typical group will meet for a couple of hours each week depending on the size of the group. How long this group will stay connected as a listening community is to be determined by the group itself. All that we recommend is that there be some type of parameters set so participants know what to expect.

Can I join a group if I am not a Christian?
By all means! Anyone who is interested in growing and learning can be a part. These groups are open to all. We believe that God is seeking a relationship with all people and that we are all on this journey called life together.
